Friesians: Finch + Blackjay

Description

My second/third attempt at making horses out of polymer clay. This time I started with a distinct breed in mind, and I'm proud to say it turned out looking like what it was supposed to. Their anatomy is also much better than Attacus, my previous Akhal-Teke sculpture (fun fact: I dropped Attacus and now he's missing his left ear, and both his front legs are cracked oops XD)

I originally planned to make them funeral horses, and planned to make a carriage for them to pull. Unfortunately my university semester started before I could finish my grand scheme, and I'm afraid poor ol' Finch and Blackjay'll have to wait until my next holiday before they find themselves some work.

Of the two, Blackjay is shorter, and has a more curved, Roman nose.

Man it was a challenge to get Blackjay to stand on three legs. Sadly, while he was balanced during the sculpting stage, I forgot that while curing in the oven polymer clay tends to soften before they set, and thus Blackjay topped over in my oven. His leg then started curving downward (or sidewards, if you stand him upright) due to gravity, and completely wrecked his balance. I won't make that mistake again in my next creature with 3 legs. For now he will be an embarrassing failure *shame*

Polymer clay (sculpey) on wire and foil armature. Painted in black acrylic (mixed in hues of red and blue but they didn't show up properly :() and sealed with varnish. Mane, tail and feathers from black alpaca.
